UNIVERSITY OF AUCKLAND B201 BUILDING
CBD, Auckland
CLIENT: Hawkins
PROJECT VALUE:
• Carpentry Works: $ 22 Million
• Concrete Works: $ 8 Million
LOCATION: Grafton, Auckland
The University of Auckland’s B201 redevelopment is a leading example of adaptive reuse, transforming a 50-year-old building into a state-of-the-art academic environment. Achieving a 6 Green Star design rating with 93 points, it stands as the highest Green Star-rated building for the university.
The deteriorating concrete façade was replaced with a lightweight curtain wall, enabling new access routes, a rooftop plant room, and a spectacular new atrium. The interior was stripped to its bare shell and refitted to accommodate Communications, Media and Screen Studies studios, as well as Social Sciences and Anthropology labs.
The project faced significant challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic, affecting labor availability and material procurement. Multiple waves of COVID-19 led to workforce shortages and supply chain disruptions, with firms stockpiling materials out of uncertainty. Despite these challenges, Livefirm stepped in to assist in achieving critical milestones, ensuring a successful handover. B201 now stands ready for another 50 years of academic excellence.
