The City Rail Link (CRL) is New Zealand’s largest and most transformative transport infrastructure project. The CRL involves the construction of twin 3.45km rail tunnels at depths of up to 42 metres, connecting Waitematā Station (Britomart) to Maungawhau Station. The project also includes two new underground stations, Te Waihorotiu (Aotea) and Karanga-a-Hape (K-Rd), which are set to redefine Auckland’s transport network.
LIVEFIRM’s scope of work for the CRL project covers carpentry works at Maungawhau Station (Mount Eden), Karanga-a-Hape Station (K-Rd), and Te Waihorotiu Station (Aotea). This includes the supply and installation of Korok wall and ceiling systems, construction of steel stud walls, wall insulation, installation of plasterboard and fibre cement linings, and installation of all doorsets. Our responsibilities extended to accommodating secondary steel within wall cavities and seismic construction, all tailored to meet the complex demands of underground construction.
The CRL project required compliance with New Zealand’s fire safety and seismic standards. Precision has been critical in this complex underground project, where all tasks align with the demanding technical requirements of a landmark infrastructure initiative.
Working up to 42 metres below ground presented unique challenges, including coordinating work in confined spaces across three major stations. Seismic considerations required innovative approaches and meticulous testing to ensure compliance with safety standards. Tight timelines and logistical constraints of working in Auckland’s CBD required precise coordination to manage concurrent tasks, ensuring materials were procured and delivered on time to meet project milestones.
These efforts were recognised with the Golden Hammer Award and a Safety Award from the Link Alliance, underscoring LIVEFIRM’s capability in delivering complex infrastructure projects.
This project demonstrates LIVEFIRM’s capability in delivering specialised subcontracting works for large-scale infrastructure projects and reinforces its role as a trusted subcontractor in New Zealand’s construction industry.
