Counties Manukau Health Tiaho Mai is a 76-patient mental health facility at the Middlemore Hospital site.

The project, AMHU (Acute Mental Health Unit) Stage 2, was completed alongside the already operational Stage 1 building and the hospital’s nearby helipad. This added unique complexities during construction, such as the need to secure site facilities and materials, or even halting site works, whenever helicopters landed or took off.

The facility’s structure comprised a combination of timber, steel, and precast concrete panels, built on insitu concrete foundations. Oversized pre-fabricated timber frames were also used, requiring special attention to install safely and correctly.

During the construction of Stage 2, the Stage 1 building required emergency repairs. Our team had not been involved in the construction of Stage 1, but were able to employ our skills and expertise to undertake these repairs upon request. These repairs were completed under the numerous restrictions of working within an operational healthcare facility.

Despite the many constraints and challenges, the project was successfully completed on time. Only minor items needed rectification, and these were all completed in half a day.
